Auroville – 2 Year Students
Auroville, the “City of Dawn” located near Puducherry has always fascinated spiritual seekers. However, not many are aware that it is also much sought after by the architect’s community too. Second year students of SCSA were headed to Auroville during the fag end of th th the year, from December 28 to 30 .
The city which is an experimental township dedicated to human unity and based on the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother, has been designed by world renowned architect Roger Anger. Students were given detailed insights into the architectural marvels of the city by Dean, Mr.Ramesh Pallikara during their trip.
One of the major highlights of the city is the “Matrimandir”, located right in the heart of Auroville. It has been acclaimed as “an outstanding and original architectural achievement” and was conceived by The Mother as ” a symbol of the Divine’s answer to man’s aspiration for perfection”.
Students took a spiraling ramp inside the Matrimandir to an airconditioned chamber of polished white marble of exquisite architectural beauty. The surface of the Matrimandir dome has been constructed using 56 kg of gold. Another highlight is the 70 cm crystal ball in a gold mount at the centre of the dome, which glows with the rays of sunlight.
The Matrimandir offered students the perfect study of a structure that is aesthetically pleasing and also scores high when it comes to the “Green” quotient. The building is equipped with a solar power plant which powers it. The manicured gardens surrounding the building offered a soothing sight to tired eyes.
Apart from the Matrimandir, students also visited the other buildings in the city including the Afsana Guesthouse, Bharat Niwas, Savitri Bhavan and Verite Learning Centre, each of which had its own unique distinguishing architectural characteristic explained to them in detail by Mr.Ramesh Pallikara. It was a truly unforgettable study trip for the students.
