Block teaching is a style of teaching where lectures, tutorials and other forms of teaching are provided in an intensive block, sometimes as short as one week or few days and student learning is optimized, typically with students studying only one course at a time.Typically, there will be a block of time for teaching followed by a block of time for independent student learning. In this intend it is different from the conventional teaching in its scheduling and the delivery of the content.
The approach which we adopted focuses on student centric training in architecture. We intended to relate theory based subjects to the studio projects. This is achieved in two steps. First the coaching in the theory subjects includes lectures and exercises. This activity based learning of theory subjects is highly facilitated by block teaching method. The opportunities lie in providing cues towards projectization.
Secondly in design studios we intend to provide cue lectures specific to projects in which students would work. These short lectures along with the design demonstrations by faculties provide training that is specific and outcome based. The block teaching method help to objectivise time in design training. There is enough time and opportunity to effectively objectivise both faculty inputs and students works and efforts.
