The project was enabled by multiple field surveys and numerous interactions with the local citizens in order to understand activities, spaces and human responses, as an evolution through time.
The enthusiastic students were split into 8 teams to observe and analyse Race Course in various aspects such as documenting the History and Evolution, Ecology and Landscape, Urban Morphology and Functional Structures, Transportation and Infrastructure, Housing, Society and Culture, Futuristic Technologies, and Streetscape and Sensory studies. This was studied and analysed to discern and comprehend its radical transformation over the years, right from its inception to its present state.
After the conclusion of extensive research and analysis, the student researchers arrived at eight justified development models as visions for Race Course in the year 2035. Using the data gleaned from the past and the present, the needs and aspirations of the city’s urban core future was created as holistic design proposals.
Spearheaded by the visionary faculty team of Architect and Urban Planners and the dedicated students at SCSA, the objective of this project was to envision the Race Course area of Coimbatore in the future, as a Responsive and Sustainable Urban Core. Urban core such as Race Course when developed to its best potential will act as Urban Catalyst and impact positive transformation and facilitate development of neighbouring regions and other cores in Coimbatore.
The essence of this redevelopment rests on the cohesion of three fundamental aspects of the city: Future, Nature and Culture, as envisioned in the Seoul declaration during the World Architects Congress titled “Soul of the City” held at South Korea recently.
